GFCI Outlets

If a circuit is not working, first look for a GFCI outlet on the circuit nearby. GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. These outlets are designed to protect you from shock and fire. These outlets are most common in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements, and in outdoor locations. There are two buttons on the outlet, one marked "TEST" and the other marked "RESET."

Press the RESET button if it has tripped. The TEST button is used to test normal functioning of the outlet. GFCI outlets can trip do to improper grounding, overload conditions, or other problems.

If the RESET button trips again and the circuit will not stay reset, unplug any devices on the circuit and call us at 832 381 4283. There may be a serious problem with your wiring.

Fuses / Breakers

Modern circuit breakers are designed to be reset easily when a circuit is accidentally and temporarily overloaded. While older buildings may still have screw-in, plug- style fuses, most buildings nowadays use breakers that operate like a simple switch.

Locate your main circuit panel. Open it and identify the breaker in the panel that has tripped. Look for a breaker that is in the "OFF" position, or one that is between "OFF" and "ON". There may be a red indicator on the breaker that has tripped. Refer to the panel manufacture's documentation, if available.

Reset the breaker by pushing the lever all the way over to the OFF position, then back to the ON position until you hear a "click."

If the breaker trips again, or trips often, there is a dangerous condition on the circuit, or a problem with a device plugged into the circuit. Because there is a risk of fire or injury, make sure the breaker remains in the OFF position, and call us to schedule a service call.
